On Tuesday, there will be a second meeting for those interested in helping the fundraising efforts for Steve.  We’ll be meeting at Plan B at 7:30 to go over the current projects, and for people to volunteer to help with those projects.

If you can help, please come.  We especially need people to work on soliciting raffle donations!

PS – I went to visit Steve today at his new facility, and he’s definitely making some progress.  He’s in good spirits, but obviously frustrated by his inability to communicate.

Steve walked!!

Jonica just called me and said that Steve walked 20 feet while holding on to the rail.  This is great news!  He has only been able to lift his leg for less than a week.

In unrelated news: Steve is leaving the hospital today.  He is going to a care facility where he will be able to have visitors.  More details to follow.

Just a reminder – the organizers of the Portland Summer Rally have pledged that all profits from this weekend will be going to Steve.  So come out, have fun, and buy stuff.  Especially the patch, Steve came up with the idea!

Steve update

Steve is gradually improving every time I see him.  He’s moved from pureed food to chopped food.  He was also able to feed himself a banana.  They’ve been taking things slow to make sure that he doesn’t get food lost in his right cheek that might cause him trouble later.

He has also been moving his right arm and leg both.  He’s not really using them yet, but he is moving them in order to get more comfortable.  That’s great progress.

His words are still few and far between.  “No” is still the easiest word for him to say — even when he means to say yes. Every day he’s regaining another word.

He’s back in the neurology department receiving excellent care.  He’s happily receiving visitors, 2 or 3 at a time.  If there’s already a few people in there, or he’s eating or getting physical/speech therapy, hang out in the hallway for a while.  Keep things mellow and only one conversation in the room at a time.

The Scooter-Relief.org donations have (as I write this) gotten over $3,350 to help with Steve’s pending financial needs but more is still needed.  We’re putting together a fund-raiser at Plan B on August 7th, with music, raffle and more.  We’re even trying to work in a burlesque show.  We’re planning other fund-raisers after that.  Some rallies are donating money as well.

Thanks to everyone who has been helping along the way.  You’re an awesome community!

Steve Sellers has been an integral part of the Portland Scooter Community for over a decade. He has touched our hearts and much as he’s touched our scooters. Recently, after what seemed to be a very bad and endless cold, he was finally diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy. Since the heart was in this condition for quite a while, he has blood clots which are detaching and have caused him one major and one minor stroke. The long-term effects of all these factors are yet to be determined, but we know the long-term costs will be extensive. Please consider donating to his fund via the widget to the right or at Scooter-Relief.org.

We will be updating everyone regarding an upcoming benefit event — stay tuned for details.
